Rio Madre Sanctuary

A sanctuary where mothers come first.

Nestled beside a beautiful river in Tzununá, Lake Atitlán, Río Madre Sanctuary is being created as a place where mothers can rest, heal, and reconnect with themselves while their children play, explore, and grow in nature.

Whether navigating postpartum, burnout, separation, grief, single motherhood, or simply the demands of everyday life, every mother deserves a place where she feels supported.

Río Madre offers a slower rhythm of life, one rooted in nature, community, and restoration.

A Different Kind of Sanctuary

While countless wellness retreats exist around the world, very few are intentionally designed around the unique needs of mothers.

Río Madre is changing that. Every space has been thoughtfully designed to care for the mother while creating a joyful, nature-filled environment for her child.

Here, mothers are invited to pause. To be cared for. To remember themselves.

The Sanctuary

What we are building

Modern eco-cabins overlooking the river

Natural river soaking pools

A riverside yoga shala

A long communal dining patio

A Nature Play Garden with supportive childcare

Gardens, quiet spaces, and places to simply be

During the high season, the eco-cabins welcome conscious travelers, creating a sustainable model that supports the sanctuary throughout the year. During quieter seasons, Río Madre becomes a refuge dedicated to mothers seeking rest, healing, and community.

The Beginning of Mother Haven Initiative

The Mother Haven Initiative is a charitable initiative dedicated to creating sustainable healing sanctuaries for mothers and their children around the world.

Our sanctuaries are designed to support mothers navigating some of life's most demanding transitions, including single motherhood, postpartum recovery, burnout, grief, birth trauma, PP depression, separation, and periods of rebuilding. Each sanctuary offers a place where mothers can restore their nervous systems, strengthen their physical and emotional well-being, reconnect with themselves, and find support within a caring community while their children grow in a safe, nature-centered environment.

Every Mother Haven Sanctuary is rooted in the culture and wisdom of its local community. Built with sustainable, earth-based practices, each sanctuary is designed to operate in harmony with the land through regenerative gardens, ecological systems, and community-led stewardship. Local mothers are at the heart of each sanctuary, helping lead, care for the space, and create meaningful employment opportunities that strengthen the surrounding community.

Río Madre Sanctuary in Guatemala is the first Mother Haven Sanctuary. It serves as the prototype for a growing network of sanctuaries that can be adapted to different cultures, landscapes, and communities while remaining grounded in the same mission: supporting mothers and children through healing, connection, and community.

*The Mother Haven Initiative is a fiscally sponsored charitable project of a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Eligible donations are tax-deductible in the United States. Every contribution directly supports the development of Río Madre Sanctuary as the first Mother Haven Sanctuary and helps establish the foundation for future sanctuaries around the world.

Our Vision

We believe motherhood was never meant to be carried alone.

We believe every mother deserves moments of rest.

We believe healing happens in nature, in community, and in spaces where mothers are free to simply be.
